Qualified Candidate for LASIK Eye Surgery:
A good candidate for laser eye surgery:
should be at least 18 years old - this ensures that the eye has matured and developed properly.
those with a lifestyle or occupation in which they are dissatisfied with their contact lenses or glasses.
have a stable vision for at least one year prior to surgery.
have sufficient corneal thickness to allow the surgeon to safely create a clean corneal flap of appropriate depth.
have healthy eyes that are free from retinal problems, corneal scars, and any eye disease.
must not suffer from any autoimmune disorder, such as Lupus or Sjogren's Syndrome.
have mild to moderate myopia (nearsightedness) within the range of treatment.
fully aware of the risks and benefits involved with LASIK surgery.
have realistic expectations regarding the outcome.
can afford to pay for the treatment since laser procedures are costly and probably not covered by health insurance policies.
should not be pregnant or nursing at the time of surgery, as hormones cause tissue fluctuations within the eye, changing the refractive error.
People with dry eye syndrome are not good candidates
People who suffer from halos or glare at nighttime are not a good candidate (If your pupil dilates to more than seven millimeters in the dark).
People who are a slow healers or have ongoing medical conditions [such as glaucoma or diabetes] are not a good candidate.
It is imperative that you meet with an experienced ophthalmologist to confirmed that you meet the requirements of LASIK and are a good candidate. Do weigh the pros and cons before undergoing surgery. If you are satisfied and happy with wearing contact lenses or glasses, then you could very well forego LASIK surgery. After all, LASIK is a surgical procedure and hence it’s bound to have associated risks and complications.
